Blue Butterfly 1st Communion Cake

Having just made a 1st Communion cake, I wasn't anticipating my next order was going to be another 1st Communion cake! But alas, it was. The popularity of my Banana Cake has grown immensely, and from word-of-mouth, this order was placed because her friend raved about my Banana Cake with White Chocolate Ganache. Her daughter loves blue on cakes, but nowhere else, and she loves butterflies too. So naturally, blue butterflies dominated the decorations.

Close-Up on Butterflies

Since I don't have any butterfly cutters, I ransacked my flower cutters and decided on leaves and petals to make butterflies from fondant. For the antanae on the large center butterfly, I used flower stamins.

Angled View

After placing the butteflies on the cake, it still looked a little plain, so I asked the grandmother if I could put some flowers I had left over from another order (and brought with me just in case I ran into this dilemma) and she thought that would be perfect. Also, while White Chocolate Ganache may not look the prettiest as it is near impossible to create a smooth finish, it sure goes great with Banana Cake! It kind of gives it an old-world Italian plaster look, which I suppose was okay since this cake was for an Italian family.
