Pumpkin Patch Cake

My cousin ordered a cake that she wanted in the shape of a horseshoe because her daughter was going to have her 1st birthday at a pony farm. That fell through. So she scrambled to come up with another plan and decided that since it was October, they'd instead have it at a pumpkin patch, and left the cake details up to me. Well, I decided to use her invitation she sent, which had mice eating corn, and incorporate that with the day's theme, pumpkin patch, and came up with this super-cute cake!

When I knew I'd be doing a pumpkin patch, I had to come up with a base. And that's when it hit me that I could use toasted coconut for the "hay" under the pumpkins!

I decided to use modeling candy instead of fondant or gumpaste for the decorations because it was for a 1 year old's birthday, and also, it tastes better!

To make some variation on the flavors and colors, I used chocolate, strawberry and vanilla cakes, and filled them with buttercream icing. In other versions of this cake, I also added a pumpkin spice cake with a delicious brown sugar & molasses filling.

The leaves were made from modeling candy and the stems from modeling chocolate, both of which hid the hole in the top of the little cakes where I filled them with icing. Filling them with icing, as opposed to icing the outside of the cakes, also made them much easier and cleaner to eat for the kids!
